Mexican national soccer team coach Javier Aguirre was hit in the head by a can thrown by a spectator and bled.

Coach Aguirre was hit in the head by a beer can thrown by the crowd shortly after losing 0-2 to Honduras in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the North American Football Confederation (CONCACAF) Nations League at San Pedro Sula Estadio Francisco Morasan in Honduras on the 16th (Korea time). Shortly after the game, someone threw a can at Aguirre to shake hands with Honduras coach, and a large amount of blood flowed from Aguirre's head.

Aguirre, who was born in 1958, is a familiar name to Korean fans as well. He led the Mexican national team at the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and the 2010 South Africa World Cup, and also took the helm of the Japanese national team from 2014 to 2015. When he served as Real Mallorca coach in La Liga from 2022-2024, he was also known as the "Teacher Lee Kang-in". He remained in the top division of the 2022 relegation zone Mallorca and took over as Mexico's head coach for the third time in July after demonstrating his leadership by actively utilizing the 2022-2023 season 'Ace' Lee Kang-in-Muriki duo and rising to ninth place in La Liga with a set piece.

In a press conference after the match against Honduras, Aguirre said 'This is football. I'm not a complainer. There's nothing I can say about anything else (other than football)." CONCACAF said in a statement that "This kind of violent behavior is not tolerated in football. We put the safety of our respective teams and fans first" and professed that "after investigating the case, we will refer the suspect to the disciplinary committee."
