An abusive video of an English Premier League (EPL) referee drew attention. The problem was that the video was made known to the EPL Big Club and the former coach of the club, raising the issue of fairness.

EPL is a league that has been controversial by referees. There were not a few clubs that suffered from misjudgment every season. However, the investigation and disciplinary action will take place immediately because there have been no cases where the referee has openly criticized a club with abusive language.

Britain's Sky Sports reported on the 12th (Korea time) that a video showing EPL referee David Coote making derogatory remarks against Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp was circulated on social media.

Sky Sports said Coote, an EPL referee, was immediately suspended by the British Professional Football Tribunal (PGMOL). The video showing Coote making disparaging comments about Liverpool and Klopp has not yet been verified, but it has spread widely on social media. PGMOL issued a statement on the incident. PGMOL says 'Coot is suspended immediately while a full investigation is conducted. PGMOL will make no comment until the process is complete, the release said.

The BBC in the UK has issued a suspension of Coote 'PGMOL, which will be announced immediately. A full investigation is underway and Coote's video has not yet been verified. It is unclear when it was filmed and whether it is authentic or not,' he said. The Daily Mail argued that it is not yet clear that Coote made this statement, saying, `There is still a possibility that the video will be made with AI.'

The Sun said Liverpool was like a poop, with Coot talking to another man in a leaked video on social media. And when asked what he thought of Klopp, he unleashed a torrent of abuse. He described Klopp as a vile and abusive language. In the released video, Coote freely uttered abusive language against Liverpool and Klopp, and even tried to hide the conversation, saying "You shouldn't share this video." However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the video really contains Coot's words and actions.

If all the videos of Coots are true, the problem can grow. The greater room for fairness controversy is due to the misjudgment that referee Coot has shown in the game against Liverpool.

Coote, who has been a referee in the EPL since 2018, also served as a referee in the previous matches between Liverpool and Aston Villa. He played as a VAR referee in the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton in October 2020, but did not take any further action after seeing Jordan Pickford's tackle on Virgil van Dijk. VanDijk suffered a traumatic injury at the time, an anterior cruciate ligament rupture, as a result of a tackle by Pickford. In addition, the referee who simply skipped Martin Odegaard's suspected handball in the 2023 match between Liverpool and Arsenal was Coote.

If the video and incident are really confirmed to be true and disciplinary action is taken, even dismissal may be possible. UK's The Sun says 'Coot is on the brink of dismissal after being suspended'

However, Coot's dismissal does not end the case and could lead to controversy over EPL referees' preference and dislike of some clubs. EPL referees already have to inform PGMOL of their cheering clubs and regions of origin, and based on this, they are affected by the allocation of games, but for non-preferred clubs, it is done by regulating only rival games of their preferred clubs. Therefore, there may be more controversy over the disadvantages of judgment due to the non-preference of judges.

In order for the fairness issue of EPL not to grow, it is expected that PGMOL's response to the Coot case will be inevitably important.
