Murphy received the honor of being the NL's best manager, overwhelmingly beating San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt (70 points) by scoring 144 points with 27 first-place votes and 3 second-place votes in the BBWAA (National Baseball Journalists Association). Boate had a splendid debut season with 142 seconds, including 27 first-place votes, two second-place votes, and one third-place vote, beating Kansas City Royals coach Matt Quantro (73 points).
However, strictly speaking, Murphy is not a complete rookie head coach. He served as Triple-A manager for San Diego in 2015.
