"There's never been such a player."
Vietnamese soccer is excited about the appearance of a naturalized player. Brazilian Nguyen Xuan Son (27, real name Rafael Son) led the team to a 5-0 victory with two goals and two assists in the fifth Group B match of the 2024 AFF Championship (Mitsubisi Cup) against Myanmar at Viet Tree Stadium in Puto, Vietnam, on the 21st. Xuan Son said "During the match, Myanmar's No. 4 player (Somo Kyaw) 'You are not a Vietnamese player' So I replied 'I love this country. For five years with my family, I thought this place was my hometown and felt comfortable. I just want to support this country and the national team,' he said in his debut match.
On singing the Vietnamese national anthem "I practice every day. I respect this country and its fans. Whenever I have time, I study Vietnamese. We will be able to talk to everyone in the next two or three years."
Vietnam won the AFF Championship in 2008 and 2018 led by former coach Park Hang-seo. Vietnam, which unfortunately finished second in the 2022 tournament, aims to regain the top spot with the leadership of 'Sikma', which took over last year. The winner of the Vietnam-Singapore match will compete with the winner of the Thailand-Philippines cup in January next year.
